Picasna 1.2 Release Notes
In this release I added some features that first Picasna users requested.
Let’s see what’s new:
— UTF-8 Unicode for all text! (All languages support)
— Light and dark color schemes.
— Next image preloading
— Reduced gallery file size (26kb instead of 135kb)
— Hide photo-caption field if empty
— Bug fixes
Now to change the color of your gallery, just change it in Picasna settings.
In future releases
We got big plans for this plugin. Here’s the short list of what you might see in next versions of Picasna:
— Sidebar widget
— Several albums in one gallery
— More services to work with (standalone, Flickr, Vimeo)
— Keyboard control
— Smart layout (to support smaller screen sizes and automatic thumbnailing)
— iPhone/iPod Touch/Android support
— Video support
And in a couple days you can test the Picasna Widget that allows you to show your image galleries everywhere even without WordPress (which is cool anyway).
Notice that donators can help with the development and even set priorities for particular functionality

Comments
We have tried to implement your plugin but it seems not to work for us. When we display the post, with the plug-in activated we are logging the error:
[27-Apr-2009 00:37:52] PHP Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_OBJECT_OPERATOR in /news/wp-content/plugins/picasna/picasna-functions.php on line 78
The net result is the post being displayed is blank after the line with the link.
When we turn off the plug-in, the everything returns to normal and the URL is clickable to the correct album.
Let us know what you think could be going wrong here.
Thanks for the help,
Bernie

Hey Igor,
I am just starting out with WordPress, and was excited to see your plugin, being a big Picasa fan. I installed your plugin (installation was smooth), but I can’t seem to get it to work. I followed your little visual tutorial, but the link just takes me directly to my picasaweb album, clicks out of the blog.
Here is the code in HTML view:
Spring Skiing
Thanks

Bernie, please switch to PHP5. I always forget to mention it in the description.

Tim, I got it.
It looks like something adds an extra tag to your links (wordpress theme or a plugin).
So your link looks like this:
<span style="font-family: Consolas; background-color: #ededff;"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/timallix/2009April13BestShots">Spring Skiing</a></span>
Try to go to HTML mode when editing post and make sure that the link on its own line and also try to add extra linebreaks before and after the link.
Let me know if it helps.

I’m new in WordPress and I’ve tried to install the plugin. I’ve also followed your directions above, but it still doesn’t work.
This is the error message displayed in my web:

Dewi, if you’re sure that you running PHP5 and it doesn’t work, then you need to wait till I release Picasna Widget (Apr 28-29). Sorry.

z gansad, yes, I thought about it. Technically it’s possible, but not that easy to implement. Probably in 2.0 version I could add this feature.

Thanks for the quick response.
It isn’t exactly what we wanted to hear since we are currently running PHP 4 and will not have an update for some time.
We do like the look of your plug-in but with that limitation we will have to examine some other solutions.
Thanks again for quick feedback. If you come up with a version that is not language version specific we will definitely have go at it.

simply stunning! plugged in and worked immediately! so fantastic. thanks so much for this great plug-in.
what i’d love to be able to do is to list up thumbnails of all picasaweb albums that i have, kinda automatically so i don’t have to create a new article+link for every new album. i have unlisted albums only.
would such a enhancement – to get an automatically generated thumbnail page with all my picasaweb albums – be possible at all? technically i mean…
keep up the great work! thanks again!

wow.. this is so cool, you really dont have to find other picasa plugin!
on the comment part, thanks for putting this in yr next release feature… probably just use photo id grabbed from picasa album and use this as reference for the comments stored in local mysql? hmm.. i’m so newbie!

Thanks for the great plug-in. Really top notch work. I wanted to let you know that GIFs, while displayed in picasa web, will not display via your plug-in. Just an FYI. I’m not sure it matters as most people would upload photos as JPG.

htmlgod, it’s a flash technology issue, it doesn’t support GIF animation (at least the version I’m using in this plugin)

Flo, actually it was my initial idea — to be able to build a portfolio that contain several albums. But then I simplified that to just one album at a time. Maybe in next versions I could add that feature.
But for now, I don’t think that it’s possible to generate the list of your albums.
Thanks for the response!

z gansad, yeah, there’s a couple ways to do that. First option is to use the Picasaweb API, which supports commenting, but requires the google authentication. Another option is to store comments locally and the third option is to build a special database for comments on picasna.com.
Anyways, it’s a whole bunch of work and I prefer to make the plugin to work simple but perfect rather than fill it with complex stuff.
Thanks for the feedback!

hi, really interested to have the local comment system — any idea how to do this?
z gansad
April 28th, 2009
z gansad, no, it’s not possible yet.

ok.. will look fwd to this feature in future.
btw, how do i include the comments google users made on the photos to be shown by picasna; together with the caption?
thanks Igor for responding.
